Your Union Structure

Your Union is organised in a democratic, linear structure based on our constitution which was passed on 3rd February 2005. Copies of this constitution are available from the office at any time and online.

The following are the aims and objectives and Union structure contained in this Constitution.

 

  • To represent and defend its members on matters affecting their rightsand interests as students of the college and as citizens.
  • To act as a channel of communication between its members and the college and other bodies.
  • To promote the collective and individual participation of students in their own education and welfare and to provide information.
  • To enter into and, as far as possible, to promote communication with other student bodies at home and abroad.
  • To provide and manage viable and quality social, recreational and commercial services designed to meet students needs and shall seek to develop and expand these services.
  • The Union opposes discrimination on the grounds of gender, age, sexual orientation, race, physical ability, religion, socio-economic status or national origin, which directly affects its members.
  • The Union shall be accountable to the students it represents.
  • The Union recognises the importance of the Irish Language and will strive to promote, develop and pursue a bilingual policy as far as is practicable but without disrupting the essential work of the Union.
  • The Union shall keep itself informed of developments and issues in the field of education, academic or otherwise, with a view to the ongoing formulation of policy.

 

The management of the Unions affairs is conducted on four levels. Referendum, General Meeting, Union Council and Union Executive. Usually, all Union meetings will be advertised in What's Onand the SU Notice Boards.

  

Union Structure

 

Referendum

This is the supreme decision making method of the Union.

General Meeting

These take place monthly usually in the College Theatre or IT Building, they give all students an opportunity to air their views and concerns. Attendance of these meetings is vital to the representational functionality of your Union. A full schedule of these meetings is on display on the main Union notice board.

Union Council

The Union Council is made up of all the class representatives and the members of the Union executive. They will be meeting once a fortnight. A full schedule of these meetings is also on display on the main Union notice board

Class Representatives

It is essential for your class to have a class representative. This person is the elected representative of your class and your classes chief spokesperson. Philip, Donna and James will be visiting all classes to facilitate these elections.

Union Executive

The Union executive is responsible for the initiation of policy of the Union subject to Union Council, General Meeting and Referendum. It meets weekly.

There are three sabbatical positions ­ President, Vice President Education, and Vice President Welfare. There are also three non-sabbatical positions of Communications Officer, Entertainments Officer, and Projects Officer.
